Carl Friedrich Benz (1844-1929)

01/09/23 #ourvälley4thewörld : The invention of the #automobile #Mannheim. Carl Friedrich Benz (1844-1929), the inventor of the Benz Patent Motor Car Number 1 of 1885 - the first practical automobile - applied for the patent in 1886. He was the son of Johann Georg Benz, a blacksmith who worked for the Baden railroad, and as his father's son, he wanted, as he explains, "a vehicle that would move along a country road without a horse and without a trace." "My favorite idea was to put the locomotive on the road. I wanted to free it from its shackles." His eureka moment as inventor he described as follows: "Suddenly, the bells started ringing, too. The New Year's Eve bells ! It was as if they were ringing in not only a new year, but also a new time, the time that would receive the new impetus of the locomotive. Suddenly it stood before us, the trailblazer that promises the future. And this trailblazer is called the gas engine. "Today's Mercedes-Benz Group AG has its origin in the merger of mechanical engineering and automotive company Benz & Cie. founded in 1883 with the Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft in 1926. www.res-institute.com

Cäcilie Bertha Benz (1849-1944)

01/04/23 #ourvälley4thewörld : The invention of the #automobile Cäcilie Bertha Benz (1849-1944) was the first woman ever to drive a motor car. With her-long distance drive (106km) from Mannheim to Pforzheim in August 1888, she proved the suitability of the Benz Patent Motor Car invented and built by her husband Carl Benz, who later on merged with Gottlieb Daimler to the company Daimler-Benz. Today, Mercedes-Benz is one of the most famous brands in the world. The following ironic insight is attributed to Bertha Benz: "A woman at the wheel is a person who obeys all traffic regulations to the letter and is scolded for doing so, for obstructing a man who does not obey them." #womanpower www.res-institute.com

Albert Einstein (1879-1955)

01/07/23 Family roots of a true genius from #ourvälley4thewörld #Cannstatt Native of Cannstatt, I can tell you firsthand that the mother of Albert Einstein (1879-1955) Pauline Einstein was born here in 1858 at Badstraße 20 in Cannstatt, as third child of Jette Koch and Julius Koch, a fruit merchant delivering the royal court of Württemberg. His grandparents first lived at Badstraße 20 and later at Brückenstraße 44. Einstein's grandmother Jette Koch is buried in the Jewish cemetery, a hundred yards from my house. Albert Einstein who was born in Ulm is considered one of the most important theoretical physicists in the history of science and is also known for his humor when explaining his own theories to others: "If you sit with a girl for two hours, you think it's one minute. But if you sit on a hot stove for one minute, you think it's two hours. That's relativity." www.res-institute.com

Hermann Ferdinand Freiligrath

#ourvälley4thewörld : Tomorrow is the 147th anniversary of the death of Hermann Ferdinand Freiligrath. The German poet and translator was born on June 17, 1810 in Detmold in the Principality of Lippe, and died on March 18, 1876 in Cannstatt, in an inn that stands on the banks of the Neckar River and today still bears the name "Alter Hasen". Rebuilt after destruction in the World War Two, the inn has a spacious dining room, facing the Neckar and the old town of Cannstatt, and is located about 200 yards from the RES Institute. The cuisine is recommended not only because of the generous portions. In his Lyric, Freiligrath was reveling in the national colors of black, red and gold and witnesses to the founding of the German Empire in 1871. The fact that he was not a flawless hurrah patriot may be attested to by the following poem about the French campaign which in the end blames the tremendous bloodshed on occasion of the 1870 battle at Mars-la-Tour: "They have spewed death and ruin, We have not suffered it. Two columns of foot, two batteries, we rode them down. The sabers swung, the bridles slung, our lances low and our flags high, so we have blown them up, - Cuirassiers we and Uhlans. But it was a blood ride, a death ride; They may have dodged our blows, but of two regiments, what rode and what fought, our second man remained. Their chests shot through, their foreheads split, they lay pale on the grass, in strength, in youth taken away, - Now, trumpeter, to the muster blown! And he took the trumpet, and he breathed into it; there, - who bravely with blaring fury led us into the glorious battle, the trumpet's voice failed. Only a soundless whimper, a cry full of pain, came out of the metal mouth; a bullet had pierced its ore, - for the dead the wound lamented! For the brave, the faithful, the watch on the Rhine, For the brothers who fell today, - for all of them, it went through our marrow and bone, they raised broken slurs. And now the night came, and we rode thither, the watch-fires were blazing all around; the horses roared, the rain poured down - and we thought of the dead, the dead!" #poetry #poetryvalley #freedom #freiligrath #history #neckarvalley #cannstatt www.res-institute.com

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770-1831)

01/08/23 Hegel : The invention of comprehensible universality #ourvälley4thewörld Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770-1831) was born in Stuttgart. His philosophy can be described as an idealistic approach to find an over vaulting systematic for the different manifestations of reality as an entity in its diverging plurality, explaining history as logic development along a time axis. Consequently his philosophy is structured in chapters like "Logic," "Philosophy of Nature," and "Philosophy of Mind" as well as a philosophy of history. Hegel's philosophy can be considered as ultimate common ground of modern philosophy which since then is further specializing in different branches of science, like sociology, history, theology, politics, jurisprudence, and the theory of art and so on. However the lingual vault he had found to include reality in its totality is structured in a way that is hard to be understood by first read. One short quotation attributed to him is emblematic for this instance : "The path to knowledge is the detour." www.res-institute.com

Hölderlin (1770-1843)

#ourvälley4thewörld : A splinter of wisdom from #theländ of poets and thinkers. We, as human-beings are born as mortals, however we are very much alive from birth on and may consider ourselves as godlike for the span of our existence on earth. Friedrich Hölderlin (1770-1843) has described our destiny in this world with the following verses: "You must descend like the ray of light, like the very refreshing rain you must descend into the land of mortality, you must enlighten, like Apollo, shake, enliven, like Jupiter, otherwise you are not worthy of your heaven !" sic #hölderlin #poetryvalley #Lauffen #Tübingen #Neckarvalley www.res-institute.com

Sigmund Lindauer (1862 - 1935)

01/06/23 #ourvälley4thewörld : The invention of the #Bra #Cannstatt Today worn by billions of women every day, it is little known that Sigmund Lindauer (1862 - 1935), a German textile entrepreneur in Cannstatt - then a small town just outside Stuttgart - has invented the Bra in 1912 and began mass production, 200 yards from my house in 1913. He was married to Rosa Kahn, who lost her life in Theresienstadt, one of the Nazi concentration camps. The brand name "Prima Donna" for corsets has been protected since 1890 and still exists today, as the brand was sold along with the trademark rights in 1990 to the Belgian lingerie manufacturer Van de Velde in Schellebellein in the province of East Flanders. "Hautana" is the brand name chosen by Sigmund Lindauer in 1912 for the "skin-tight brassiere," a silk jersey model worn directly against the skin without extra stiffeners. In 1912 the patent "number 346" was registered in Stuttgart. #womenwear #cannstatt #eastflanders #intimacy #primadonna #hautana www.res-institute.com

Maultasche

#ourvälley4thewörld : Maultaschen are not only a popular dish among the Swabians, whether in the broth, stewed or roasted. But have you ever heard the tale of this culinary invention? In order to circumvent the ban on meat consumption during Lent, a few hundred years ago a resourceful monk from the Maulbronn monastery invented this kind of dumpling filled with meat. Seen from the outside, only the paste is obvious. Incidentally, the dish is also suitable for vegans, because "Herrgottsb'scheißerle" means „god scammer“. Just kidding - there are also Maultaschen with vegetable filling only. #maultasche #meat #vegan #monk #culinaryvälley #Maulbronn #monastery #maultäschle www.res-institute.com

Pretzel

Today something delicious from #ourvälley4thewörld : In 1477, the court baker Frieder from the Swabian town of Urach had angered his Count Eberhard to such an extent that the latter threatened him with the death penalty, but gave him a second chance. Count Eberhard demanded nothing less than a pastry through which the sun shines three times. According to the legend, it was under these circumstances that his bakerman invented the pretzel, which is now appreciated worldwide. With the invention of a specially looped knot, the baker has solved the task and pulled his head out of the noose. Of course, the pretzel from Swabia is unsurpassed in its bivalent treat with crunchy and soft parts. The pretzel as a pastry is so deeply rooted in the Swabian consciousness, that the split rear window of the first VW Beetle, which by the way was built in Stuttgart, is known as the "pretzel window Beetle". #Stuttgart #BadUrach #beetle #pretzel #ourvälley www.res-institute.com

Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805)

#ourvälley4thewörld : The revolutionary philosopher in the guise of a poet. Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805). Having been born into a period of dramatic change, Schiller, during his rather short live span has had influenced the transition from the absolutist to the bourgeois age as a poet, philosopher and historian. Thoughts and ideals of the French Revolution found an expression in his poetry and literature. The conflict with his sovereign Carl Eugen, absolutist ruler in Württemberg at the time, therefore had seemed to be unavoidable during his juvenal 'Stum und Drang' period. His opposition against arbitrary imperiousness expressed with pathos and sensibility up today inspires the youth. On the planks of the stage, where his dramas were put in scene he had found the free space to unfold his ideas of freedom and even more he had aimed at bringing about a new bourgeois self consciousness by idyllic and dramatic play in order to form a new prototype of man by aesthetic means. His educational program based on reason and on aesthetic insight and therefore can be seen as a non-violent alternative to the French Revolution as well as to politics of his time, in which he saw only brute forces at work. As he had said the "the construction of a true political freedom" is the "most perfect of all works of art". Plays such as The Robbers, Don Carlos, The Maid of Orleans or William Tell still are regularly on the program of German theaters and are an impressive testimony to Schiller's relevance in our time, which is also a period of upheaval. His later work, being part of the so called Weimar Classicism in the decade between 1795 and 1805 with works like "Don Carlos" and fundamental literary-theoretical treatises such as "Über die ästhetische Erziehung des Menschen und Über naive und sentimentalische Dichtung (On the Aesthetic Education of Man and On Naive and Sentimental Poetry) reveal powerful language and images and are a powerful testimony of his intention for aesthetic education combining understanding and feeling. To his German-speaking readership he had introduced the ideals of reason, humanity and freedom that were developing in his century. The following verses characterize his age, the 18th century, as well as ours : "The new invades with power, the old, The worthy disappears, other times come, There lives a different-thinking generation!" #schiller #poetryvalley #theater #drama #essay #literature #poetry #poet #philosophy #literaturearchive #marbach #neckarvalley #weimar #genius #revolution #freedom #dignity #stuttgart #theländ www.res-institute.com

Welcome to Baden-Württemberg

#ourvälley4thewörld : Come to us - we need you ! #welcometothevälley Besides the Ruhr area, the Neckar valley is an industrial hotspot in Germany. In order to boost the economy after 2nd World War, the first guest workers were invited to come to Germany in the 1950s. Originally, the helpers were supposed to return home after completing the job. Guest workers however became permanent employees who lived in Germany and started families. Many German families originally came from Turkey, Croatia, Italy, Greece and former Yugoslavia for example. The immigration history means that people with a migration background are living and working here meanwhile in the third and fourth generation. Today the former migrants are our fellow citizens, employees, neighbors, friends and family members. Nowadays large companies such as Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Mahle, Bosch and others employ people from all over the world. Owing to globalization, companies have business branches abroad and worldwide. No surprise then, that the state of Baden-Württemberg intents to recruit skilled workers from abroad again with the current THE LÄND campaign. #skilledlabour #germany #theländ #industry #history #united #international #welcome #workers #work www.res-institute.com

Wilhelma

#ourvälley4thewörld : Today, the Wilhelma is a zoological and botanical garden. But its historical core was laid out from 1842 on according to plans by the architect Karl Ludwig von Zanth for King Wilhelm I of Württemberg. After destruction in World War II, four original parts of the building ensemble were partially restored. The building had a heating system very advanced for the time. The architecture reflects the enthusiasm of King Wilhelm I, who loved Arabian horses but also found role models in Istanbul, Damascus and Cairo for his buildings. Traditional turkish bath houses (hamams) and Mamluk mosques were studied on occasion of an expedition to the Orient initiated by the King. The banquet hall was used by European aristocracy for celebrations. By the way, this innovative park was not simply used as a palace, because there are clear elements anticipating spa architecture as well as botanical gardens. Subsequent use for the public was already being considered by the planners in the 19th century. Zoos are also a development of that time and they have exotic architectural (so-called 'moorish') styles as well - but the nowadays controversial animal husbandry and exhibition on a large scale was not originally intended in the Wilhelma. King Wilhelm I of Württemberg

#ourvälley4thewörld : With respect, King Wilhelm I of Württemberg, the founder of the University of Hohenheim, horse friend, and last but not least trailblazer of the considerable industrialization in the Neckar valley. Wilhelm I (=William I) ruled solidly over his country for almost 50 years and still is valued for his deeds today. When he died in 1864, these are said to have been his last words: "It hurts a lot to have to leave this beautiful country". Baden-Württemberg would not be what it is today without King Wilhelm I. #hohenheimuniversity #industrialization #neckarvalley #badenwuerttemberg www.res-institute.com
