The patent https://lnkd.in/gFesNkZY shows a broad universality for fluid machines serving different purposes.
Turbines are generally divided into resistance runners and lift runners. The rotational speed of the rotor blade of a resistance runner can never exceed the flow velocity, regardless of whether it is an air flow or a water flow. While the vast majority of wind turbines are lift runners, this principle has not yet become established in water turbines. Classic water turbines such as Pelton, Francis and Kaplan turbines are resistance runners and use the head or overpressure of the water to convert the flow energy into rotational energy in order to generate electricity. Transverse structures in river courses can be considered a serious disadvantage as they inhibit the free flow of water, always interfere with the ecosystem of a river and also require complex, cost-intensive construction work. At RES, we have developed turbines that can be integrated freely into a river course without the need for a dam structure, enabling the kinetic energy to be converted directly from a flowing watercourse. To ensure that this is also possible in slow-flowing watercourses, the water turbines presented below are designed as buoyancy turbines. They use an asymmetrical blade profile, which provides approximately one third more lift than a symmetrical profile. According to the invention, all water turbines have an adjustable nose segment and an adjustable trailing edge segment hinged to a load-bearing steel hollow box profile blade segment. This ensures that the suction side of the asymmetrical blade profile is always aligned with the flow direction, both upstream and downstream. The video shows horizontal rotor rollers integrated into a bridge structure spanning a river without obstructing it.

The RES water turbine uses electromechanical actuators integrated into the blades to adjust the rotor blades. The suction side of the blades always faces the direction of the flow.
Fish can safely pass through the turbine rotor in both directions. In this example, the vertical rotor modules are integrated into a bridge structure. Further examples of the invention demonstrate that the buoyancy runner principle can be used as a run-of-river power plant in inland waters, a tidal power plant in suitable coastal areas, and an underwater hydroelectric power plant. The rotor blades consist of front, middle, and rear blade segments. The middle blade segment is designed as a rigid longitudinal beam of the rotor blade. At diameters P and P', the suction side of the blade profile changes regularly in the direction of flow.

The rotor modules shown here can be anchored at the bottom of a flowing watercourse or even the seafloor, where they convert the flow into rotational energy. Large rivers such as the Nile, the Amazon, the Yangtze, the Mississippi-Missouri, the Huang He (Yellow River), the Ob-Irtysh, the Amur, the Ganges, the Lena, the Congo, and the Mekong carry water toward the sea that goes largely unused. Waterways on Earth's surface represent an untapped energy source. With underwater buoyancy runner technology, it is possible to extract energy from rivers without negatively impacting the ecosystem. Tidal currents represent a second largely untapped energy reservoir. The underwater topography of the continental shelves is shaped in a way that amplifies tidal currents and allows them to reach considerable speeds. This is precisely where it would be worthwhile to use RES's proposed underwater turbines for energy generation.

The Energy Chain, which is dedicated to the 17.4 million people of the Netherlands, has published its first post of the year. At high tide, the Oosterschelde is dammed up, and at low tide, the water flows into the North Sea at high speed. Between the piers of the barrage are drums containing six adjustable rotor blades each. These are driven by the current and connected by intermediate rotor discs to form a shear- and torsion-resistant frame girder with a nine-metre diameter. These rotor drums, with their adjustable blades, rotate at speeds up to five times faster than the current. Channeled through the existing barrage, they could generate an unlimited amount of energy. When the P-P' diameter is oriented perpendicular to the flow direction, the suction side of the asymmetrical blade profiles alternates between the inside and outside of the orbit. This causes the asymmetrically profiled adjustable rotor blades to generate tangential propulsive forces from lift in the flow-oriented and downstream half of the orbit.

A series of water turbines can be installed at the Oosterschelde barrier. Each turbine unit features a funnel-shaped confuser or confuser stage. This advanced "Wells turbine," which has a flow diameter of 6 meters, has the unique ability to maintain its direction of rotation when the flow direction changes due to the ebb and flow of the tide. Each turbine unit generates approximately 500 kW around the clock. Assuming hundreds of these turbines can be installed, the output would be in the range of 50 to 100 MW. The turbine's ring generator is integrated into the bridge structure, and the stator and rotor are accessible via a maintenance walkway. The rotor blade has a central wing segment that connects it to the rotor and a flow-through hub. The hub is designed as one of the turbine wheel's six spokes. Adjustable nose and trailing edge segments are hinged to each of these spokes. Synchronizing the adjustment of these rotor blade segments creates an asymmetrical wing profile that can be aligned with the flow at a positive angle of attack during ebb and flood tides. The positive angle of attack causes the asymmetrical wing profile to generate a high lift force in the direction of rotation, converting the kinetic energy of the water into rotational movement. A variable asymmetrical blade profile is superior to a conventional turbine blade wherever there is a regularly changing flow direction. The confuser and diffuser stages use the nozzle effect to accelerate the flow velocity in the inlet through narrowing and in the outlet through suction.

Energy can be generated wherever there is flowing water.
A floating turbine consists of a float that houses a generator. The generator is connected to an underwater rotor via a shaft. The top of the float is covered with photovoltaic cells. The rotor blades are connected by ring beams at their upper and lower ends and arranged at a radial distance from the shaft by tension spokes. The suction side of the rotor blades has a variable, asymmetrical foil profile and is aligned in the direction of flow by integrated actuators within both halves of the orbit, which is divided by diameters P and P'.

This embodiment of the invention features two vertical-axis rotors connected to a float. The float is anchored to the riverbed or seafloor and automatically aligns with the current. These water turbines can be manufactured in different sizes and are suitable for seasonal operation on rivers that freeze over in the winter, such as the St. Lawrence River in Canada. This type of energy generation is environmentally friendly and allows for maintenance of the turbine during the winter months.
